UCD Mid-Term Debate Camp 2017
What is the UCD Debate Camp?
For decades, the debating societies of UCD have helped thousands of schoolchildren to find their voices through their school’s debating competitions. As organisers and judges we have seen shy students learn to command the attention of the room, and chatterboxes become gifted communicators.
Following the success of last year’s camps, this November we are excited for the chance to coach debating in a new way, through a three day camp held in UCD’s Belfield Campus.
Students will receive personalised coaching, training, feedback and guidance from some of the most accomplished debaters in Ireland. Many of our coaches have excelled at European and worldwide championships. We welcome students of all ability and experience, from the complete novice looking to learn more about debating, to the experienced competitor looking to refine their skills.
Debating can be a life-changing activity that develops key skills to help students stand out academically and professionally. But it’s also a way to expand your horizons, challenge yourself and make the best of friends. We want to work to bring that to students all across the country!
Each camp will run from 10am to 4pm from Wednesday the 1st of November to Friday the 3rd of November. Students will be streamed into Junior and Senior cycle, both being trained in Brititsh Parliamentary Style. A typical timetable for the day would look like this:
• 10:00 – 10:45: Icebreakers and public speaking skills
• 10:45 – 11:15: Break
• 11:15 – 12:30: Interactive Topic Discussion, e.g; Rights And Freedoms
• 12:30 – 1:00: Lunch
• 1:00 – 3:00: Debate and Feedback
• 3:00 – 4:00 Activity/Social – e.g. Improv Drama
As the week goes on and the strengths and interests of the group become more apparent we will focus on activities that are of the most interest and use to the students.
The week culminates in a show debate where all students can demonstrate their skills to family members and friends they invite along.
