The 16th October 2017 saw the historic announcement of the discovery of visible light accompanying a gravitational wave. The source of gravitational waves, named GW170817, appeared to be a pair of merging neutron stars. For the first time ever, space based gamma ray telescopes observed a simultaneous jet of high energy radiation blasted out from GW170817, while telescopes on the ground found a counterpart in visible light. Putting this unique dataset together has allowed astronomers to understand how neutron stars merge, and in doing so, create some of the heavy elements in the Universe such as gold! Dr. Morgan Fraser discusses the results from this epic collision, this Monday the 6th of November.
