Combinatorial aspects of the Abelian sandpile model with Professor Mark Dukes

    Event Description

The Abelian sandpile model came into existence as a model of discrete diffusion that first showcased the concept of self-organized criticality. In this talk I will give an overview of the Abelian sandpile model from a combinatorial viewpoint and highlight some rich results that relate the model on well known graphs to other discrete structures that include parking functions, lattice animals, and combinatorial necklaces. These correspondences have given rise to new classes of symmetric polynomials whose symmetry remains unexplained.
