Ethics in AI Discussion with NetSoc & PhilSoc

    UCD Netsoc
    • 14 Oct 2020, 06:00 pm to 14 Oct 2020

    Event Description

Join Netsoc and Philsoc as we discuss the topic of ethics in AI and address recent controversies. We will be joined by researchers Abeba Birhane, Ph.D. candidate at UCD, and Dr. Vinay Prabhu, principal machine learning scientist at UnifyID, whose recent paper uncovered racist and misogynistic bias in an MIT image library that was used to train AI, which was already cited hundreds of times in research. Their work has resulted in MIT voluntarily and formally withdrawing the data set. This event will explore many questions about ethics including, but not limited to:

    • What ethical principles should AI researchers and developers follow?
    • Are there restrictions on the ethical use of AI?
    • What is the best way to design morally beneficial AI?
    • Is it possible or desirable to build moral principles into AI systems?
    • When AI systems cause benefits or harm, who is morally responsible?
    • Are AI systems themselves potential objects of moral concern?
    • What moral framework is best used to assess questions about the ethics of AI?
