The Cumann will be commemorating our namesake Kevin Barry this Tuesday in Glasnevin Cemetery. Kevin Barry was executed aged 18 in November 1920 after taking part in an IRA operation which resulted in the deaths of 3 British Soldiers. Barry was the first Irish Republican to be executed by the British since the 1916 Easter Rising and as a young UCD student his death caused outrage among nationalist public opinion, coming days after the death of Terence MacSwiney, Lord Mayor of Cork on hunger strike. With his refusal to inform, Kevin Barry has become one of the most celebrated Irish Republicans and the namesake of the Cumann. The Commemoration will be preceded by a tour of the cemetery including a re-enactment of Padraig Pearses 1915 graveside oration at the funeral of Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa. Anyone interested in going should drop the FB/Instagram page or any Kevin Barry Cumann committee members a quick message just for numbers, all welcome!
