Jean-Claude Trichet is one of the most influential people of the 21st century. Once ranked the fifth most powerful person in the world, he served as President of the European Central Bank from 2003 until 2011. In that time, he led the Eurozone from its early stages through the crisis years. His signature is perhaps the most famous in Europe with it appearing on all of the original Euro notes. In the course of his career, Mr. Trichet has served in French civil service, the IMF, World Bank and as Governor of the French central bank. Mr. Trichet currently serves as Honorary Governor of the French central bank and a director of Airbus. During his time in the ECB, he oversaw the inclusion of more members to the Eurozone. As one of the heads of the “troika” with the IMF and European Commission, he led bailout programmes that provided loans and necessitated budget cuts in Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Greece and Cyprus. Credited by some for saving Europe from the brink of financial collapse, the effects of ECB policy are still contentious throughout Europe. In the advent of the global uncertainty, Mr. Trichet’s extensive experience will offer unrivalled insights into the future of the EU, the Euro, globalisation and countless other areas that dominate the headlines on a daily basis.
