THe L&H presents the abortion debate | Wednesday, 5th of October, 6pm, Fitzgerald Debating Chamber. Ireland has a long history of debating the issue of abortion, which culminated in our 2018 vote to repeal the 8th amendment. Last year, when the US Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v Wade was leaked, everyone was surprised. It caused us to wonder about the future of abortion both in the US and globally. Given that Irelands abortion laws subjected women to ‘cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment’ according to the UN, is Ireland even in a position to condemn another country’s abortion laws? Should we respect judicial independence even when its integrity has been called into question? The L&H are hosting a debate entitled “This House Believes that the Irish Government Should Condem the Decision to Overturn Roe v Wade” where we hope these questions and many more will be answered. We have speakers like Orla O’Connor from the National Womens Council and Cora Sherlock from the Pro-Life Campaign.
