The issue of abortion has been one of the most emotive and debated issues in the Republic of Ireland for decades. Since the enactment of Article 40.3.3° of Bunreacht na hÉireann in 1983, the subject has remained entrenched in public discourse, most recently at the Citizens’ Assembly. An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has promised to put a referendum to the people of Ireland in 2018 on the Eight Amendment. For everyone across the wide spectrum of opinions on abortion, it is a very real issue that touches on a multiplicity of political, socio economic, moral, health-related and legal issues. The motion for the debate is thus: This House Would Repeal the Eight Amendment. Speakers include TDs, students and campaigners. LawSoc always aims to have the best intellectual and engaging conversations. However particularly this week, we want to emphasise that this is very real and personal conversation for many people. This debate will be conducted in a respectful manner. A reception of pizza and slushies will follow the debate outside the Fitzgerald Chamber in the Student Centre.
