UCD Biological Society is delighted to announce that on the 20th of February we will be presenting Dr. Beth Shapiro with the inaugural award from the society, the George Sigerson Award for Inspiring Aspiring Scientists. Beth Shapiro is an evolutionary molecular biologist whose work focuses on the analysis of ancient DNA, specifically of a mammoth. With the sequencing of the mammoth genome she focuses on the topic of resurrecting extinct animals. This has become especially important in recent times with the increasing rate of extinction in animal populations. Dr. Shapiro has also researched the complex relationship between the environment and the evolution of species, especially how climate change has increased the rate of extinction in animals. She has been awarded many accolades, such as the MacArthur Fellowship (aka the “genius grant”) and a Royal Society University Research Fellowship. Dr. Shapiro is currently a professor at University of California, Santa Cruz.
