Law Soc’s Top 3 Events of This Year

This week we have a guest post from Adam Stairs, the Treasurer of the Law society.  Here’s his top three events Law Soc hosted this semester:

    #1: The Abortion Debate

Over 500 people were in attendance for the largest student debate in country.
The debate featured high profile guest speakers such as Ruth Coppinger TD and Hannah Beresford. We hold this debate each year because it’s often the first time students get to hear both sides of the issue, and it allows them to make up their minds on the matter.

     #2 The LawSoc IV

Our first IV became the largest in UCD and one of the biggest in Ireland in it’s first year.
Just under 50 teams took part.  Entrants came from all over the World including Glasgow, Oxford, London, Netherlands, Poland, Germany and Tele Aviv to name a few.
The competitions motions were picked by some of the worlds best debaters, including those who set motions for the World and European championships.  There was 2 categories one for the “open” break and one for ESL speakers (English as a second language). The open final was won by Tel Aviv and ESL by Berlin

#3: To Hell or To Connacht

We ran the first ever mystery train in UCD: a Halloween & fancy dress themed event.
450 people went on an 8 carriage chartered train (There was so many people we stuck two trains together to get the size we wanted).  We had DJs on board and also had a silent disco and trad music.  We went to Sligo to a nightclub and the returned to Dublin.
