Want to be a part of the most active society in UCD?? Then LawSoc is the place for you. Running events almost every day of term, there really is something for everyone in the Law Society, regardless of what you study! Functioning as both a faculty and debating society, LawSoc has a tradition of fostering debate, developing legal skills, and providing career and social opportunities for students across UCD.
Interested in debating? We run weekly house debates on Tuesdays in the FitzGerald Chamber on a range of motions from the serious (United Ireland, Assisted Dying), to the less serious (Dubs v Culchies and Santa is a Bad Role Model)! These debates attract fascinating guests from politics, the media and many more spheres. If you’re interested in getting involved in debating, we run two internal debating competitions, James Joyce Maidens and Maidens Mace, and send speakers and judges to competitions across Europe and beyond. Don’t worry if you’ve no experience in debating as we run training sessions to make you all into experts!!
If events are more your scene, we’ve got you covered too. As a society, we run regular events such as nights out, movie screenings, and bingo! On top of this, we also run the premier social event of the UCD Calendar, which is of course the famed LawBall, which will be coming to a campus near you. We also bring in brilliant guest speakers, with the likes of Richard Grogan, Donald Tusk, The Script, and Bill Clinton having addressed LawSoc in the past and this year is no exception with a list of exciting guests ready to visit campus.
Finally, as the name suggests, we are the Law Society and if you’re interested in a legal career, we have loads for you too. From careers advice and workshops every week to exam prep, we’ll help you unleash your inner Harvey Specter and Saul Goodman. Lawsoc runs events that help you to develop skills that you wouldn’t necessarily get to work on in the lecture theatre. Our Mooting and Mock Trial departments run trainings and competitions that help to develop your advocacy skills and allow you to really engage with your degree in an enjoyable way.
We’re always open to questions and suggestions, so if you’d like to ask us anything then message our socials (usually @ucdlawsoc or something like that) or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Looking forward to seeing you at our events soon!!
