Only in its 8th session, UCD Musical Society is now established as one of most active societies on campus and one of the most active musical societies in Ireland. Set up in 2009 by a group of passionate students as an offspring from UCD Dramsoc it has grown from strength to strength each year, catering for students with a love of musical theatre.
The 8th Session saw the introduction of the first ever Inaugural Show, the intimate Jason Robert Brown’s The Last Five Years in September. In November, again turning to Jason Robert Brown, the emotionally haunting Parade was brought to life and more recently Lin Manuel Miranda’s upbeat In The Heights dazzled Astra Hall. Last year saw the staging of Jekyll & Hyde and the hugely successful Legally Blonde that received two AIMS nominations – Best Ensemble and Best Choreography. Previous years have also seen: Bonnie & Clyde, A Chorus Line, The Producers, Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd, Grease, Cabaret, Little Shop of Horrors and The Wedding Singer on stage.
UCD Musical Society is not just about the productions it brings to life every year but about its constant opportunities for members to get involved. The Vocal Group is the heart of the society, running every Monday in the student centre. It is a non-auditioned group where anyone who wants to get involved can join in. They enjoy performance opportunities throughout the year culminating in the Vocal Group Showcase in semester two. The society also hosts the Performing Arts Ball, Freshers Takeover Showcases, The Musical Society Tony Awards, weekly Tea & Tunes jamming sessions, Open Mic Nights in the bar and developmental workshops, not only on campus for members but also off campus as part of the community outreach program.
The success of the society is attributable to its very hard-working committee and the enthusiasm of its members. Renowned for its welcoming, inclusive and friendly reputation it is always seeking new members to get involved while studying at UCD.
