    Science Society

Calling all UCD students with a passion for science!

UCD Science Society is the place to be for science enthusiasts and Science degree students alike. With over 1,000 members in 2016, we are responsible for some of the largest events on campus as part of our mission to inject some excitement into your college life. These include:

    • Science Day, including Science Night
    • the Science Ball
    • our Pubathon (who said pubbing wasn’t a sport?)
    • the infamous Jock Walk (think lab coats, underwear and not much else) and
    • our most famous event: the Sci-cle to Galway

We also take it upon ourselves to get you your weekly dose of science, be it through our fabulous guest speakers, pizza nights, or just plain old tea and a chat.

On top of this, we’re one of the largest student-run charities in the country, raising money for the Children’s Medical & Research Foundation, Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin. All proceeds from our events go DIRECTLY to charity, so there’s no need to feel guilty after that night out! Scicle to Galway

Our annual flagship event, the Scicle to Galway showcases what Science Society is all about.

Each year, over 100 brave Science students and science enthusiasts (along with a couple of lecturers!) face off against the elements to cycle the 200 kilometers from Dublin during the final weekend of January to raise funds for our partner charity Children’s Medical & Research Foundation, Crumlin.

The weekend begins at the crack of dawn Friday morning as the cyclists set off from Liffey Valley under the leadership of experienced marshalls. After 6 hours in the saddle, with breaks every 25km, we reach our halfway point in Athlone. There, we stop for the evening to refuel and get some rest before completing the trip the following day, deservedly celebrating in Galway the following night, and getting a coach back to Dublin on Sunday.

Each year, tens of thousands of Euro is raised for CMRF by our cyclists through sponsorship, making this our biggest charity event of the year.

The Scicle is regarded by many to be a highlight of their time at UCD, and a must-do for every Science student. The craic had on the road, along with the friendships made and the sense of satisfaction felt when sailing into Eyre Square makes this event one of the best things you will do in college.
