UCD Debating Success at the Cork IV
UCD Debating Success at the annual Cork Intervarsity competition 2017
UCD Debating had a phenomenal weekend participating in the Cork IV 2017, which took place from November the 24th to
the 25th. The LawSoc team of Dylan Delaney and Orla Gaughran won the Novice Final, while 7
UCD teams and 7 judges progressed to the quarterfinals and beyond.
Aisling Tully and Aishling Kinsella (L&H) and Adam Stairs and Rachael Mullally (LawSoc)
reached the open semi-finals. Other teams reaching the quarterfinals were: Juliette Barnes
and Aayan Atiq, Cora Keegan and Shane Sweeney, Kevin Heavey and Carl Whelan (L&H); Caoimhe
Gethings and Andrea Whelton and Dara Keenan and Leon Langdon (LawSoc).
In addition to Dylan and Orla winning the Novice Final, Scott Donohoe and Calem Martin
(L&H) reached the Novice Final, with Orla topping the speaker tab. This is the third year in a
row that UCD have won the Novice Final. Anthony Tracey and Des Cooke (LawSoc) also
made it to the Novice Final, however, missed out due to a technical error.
UCD was also very well represented in the judge break with Sinéad McCarthy, Ella
McLoughlin, Laura Hogan, Isabel Cooke, James Brandon, and Conor White. Lucy Murphy
was a chief adjudicator of the competition.
Special mention is due to Head UCD Debating Coach Aodhán Peelo for overseeing such
success at the competition.
